Setting Steel Fence Posts: Cement, Depth, and Other Key Tips

Published by MW Fence Company on 9-16-2025

Steel fencing is a favored choice for both residential and commercial properties due to its strength, durability, and resistance to rot and pests. However, installing steel fence posts correctly is vital for a fence that remains upright and secure for years to come. Below, MW Fence answers two of the most common questions from property owners: Do you need to use cement for steel fence posts, and how deep should steel fence posts be set? We also offer best-practice tips for your steel fence investment.

Do You Need to Use Cement for Steel Fence Posts?

Cementing steel fence posts adds significant stability and can greatly extend the life of your fence. Setting your posts in concrete is strongly recommended under most conditions, especially for permanent fences, taller structures, or areas exposed to wind or unstable soil. A concrete anchor prevents movement, leaning, and shifting over time and provides additional strength against external pressures.

However, it is possible to drive steel posts directly into the ground without cement. This method can work in situations where:

  • The soil is stable and well-draining,
  • The fence does not require maximum structural strength (such as for temporary or short fences),
  • You have the equipment to drive posts deep enough for secure installation.

For permanent, long-lasting fencing, cementing the posts is almost always the best path forward. In some cases, mixed methods are used: only cementing corner, end, or gate posts for rigidity, with line posts driven or backfilled.

How Deep Should Steel Fence Posts Be Set?

General Rule: The post hole depth should be at least one-third the total length of the post. For example, a 6ft-tall fence should have posts set roughly 2ft deep. For fences over 6ft, or in areas with high winds, a 3ft depth is often recommended, especially if you are not using concrete.

Recommended Depths:

  • For fences 6ft and under: Set posts a minimum of 2ft deep using concrete.
  • For taller fences (7ft+): Increase depth to at least 3ft.
  • End, corner, and gate posts benefit from at least 30in of depth with concrete for extra stability.

Other Considerations:

  • In cold climates, always dig post holes below the frost line to prevent upheaval when the ground freezes and thaws.
  • For added durability, pour 4–6in of gravel at the bottom of the post hole for drainage before adding concrete.

Additional Steel Fence Installation Considerations

  • Hole Size: The width should typically be three times the post diameter (e.g., a 2in post = 6in diameter hole).
  • Alignment & Bracing: Use braces and a level to keep posts straight while the concrete cures.
  • Backfill: Always mound concrete or soil at the top of the hole away from the post to shed water.
  • Soil Type: More unstable soil (like clay or sand) requires deeper and possibly wider holes, and concrete is highly recommended in these areas.
